I think we can all agree that PBS is designed to be an educational television production company. I also think we can all attest to the good that it has done in at least one of our children, am I right? That is why I am so pissed that they made a newer character, Baby Bear, talk with a speech impediment. What the hell are they trying to do to me? I have 7 kids who all have their own little quirks. Aiden happens to be tongue tied and it creates a huge impediment in his speech. We are seriously trying to correct his speech because his teacher is never going to understand what he means by "I weewy want yemmon yoaf!"
Lately, Aiden's will to self correct has really waned and I couldn't figure out why. Then, as we watched Sesame Street this morning, he told me that Baby Bear is his favorite character. Well no shit he doesn't want to change his ways! It makes total sense to me now. They make this adorable little bear who cannot pronounce his "R" to be the poster child for laziness. "Hey, if Baby Bear doesn't have to talk right, why do I ?" And while we are at it...let's just call Cookie Monster's obsession with all things round and sugary, what it really is... a fast track to obesity. He is going to have some issues when he reaches puberty and the other muppets start making fun of his muffin top (and I'm not talking about the pastry!) What's next, a leopard with ADHD who refuses to take his meds and bounces up and down the street, having temper tantrums and throwing his fellow muppets against the walls? How about an overly bossy buffalo who forces all of the other muppets to play whatever she wants to play and then blows up when they run away crying? Why only ruin one of my kids? Why not just go for the gold and enable all of our shortcomings? The least they could do is show Maria taking her Lexapro, so I can feel better about my vice, as well!

K-spoon!! Where've you been for the past 10 years? We've been enduring that bear since he appeared on "Elmopalooza." He IS quite annoying and I'm not sure why they have him talk like he does.
I am going to put on my supersuit and defend Cookie's honor, though. He was created way back when puppets could be fun and obesity wasn't an issue. Maybe they could create a new brother or cousin for Cookie called "Carrot Monster," who only eats healthy food.
*Sigh* We can't even watch good ol' Sesame Street anymore without picking it apart. Is this a bad time to bring up that I let my kids watch old tapes of Roadrunner and Wiley Coyote? I hope that Jake doesn't go out and try to kill someone with an anvil tomorrow . . . then we'd have to bail him out of jail with his college money.
I couldn't agree with you more! That Baby bear and his sister are the worst. A while back there was one where they were fighting over crayons saying "mine crayon, mine crayon" That is great the educational show is using horrible grammar, and the bear is being selfish. I am sure there was a moral to the story but I don't think my kids got it. I am not that my grammar is the best but I am not claiming to educate either!
Love your blog!

The creators at PBS feel that as a parent of any number of kids, it's THEIR job to entertain and YOUR job to educate despite the fact that PBS claims to do both...remember if the ad sounds to good to be true...it is!
Besides IF PBS DID teach you kids proper English you kids may pick up on ALL of the lessons that PBS claims to offer therefore rendering their services in your house useless after the first year or so...and we all know they can't let that happen can they? So this is how they keep their services needed in everyone's house.
Hey, if you want an ADHD character, flip over to Disney and watch Tigger and the gang!
You're right, Hettie!
Eeyore: manic depressive
Piglet: Paranoid schitzophrenic
Tigger: Severe ADHD
Pooh: Lethargic Obesity
Roo: Over protective parent
Gopher: Obsessive/Compulsive digger
Christopher Robin: Talks to inatimate objects (hallucination)
Owl: f#cking know it all
That's pretty friggin scary, isn't it!? And they came out with adult cartoons for what reason? The kid ones do me just fine. Unfortunately, I can relate (only a little and not to all characters, I promise!) :O)
